Computers use a significant amount of electricity as they are usually on for several hours during the day. Here are a few ways you can save power on your PCs

1. Ditch the Desktop!!

Desktops typically consume a combined power (monitor+CPU) of between 500-700W, which is about 10 times the power consumption of most laptops. Though there are still a few advantages of using a desktop over a laptop (even in the year 2021 J) like (i) they are more powerful and faster for comparative specs (especially for those users with “heavy” software) (ii) usually cheaper to buy (iii) usually cheaper to repair (iii) usually easier and cheaper to upgrade [1]. These advantages are mostly seen by the heavier and high-tech users; but for most of us “ordinary mortals” the laptop is good due to portability and low power consumption. The low consumption results in a thinner electricity bill and smaller solar system!!

2. Disconnect External devices

Devices connected to the computer; like printers, speakers ; consume a lot of power, even when in stand-by, and should be disconnected and switched off when not in use [2].

3. Shut-down your computer

-when you are done using your computer for the day, SHUT IT DOWN, do not leave it in sleep or standby mode, which consumes electricity.

4. Energy Star-Rated Machines

Some computers on the market have energy star ratings: a measure of the machine’s energy efficiency and optimisation. The star rating is a guarantee that the machine will achieve a certain level of efficiency and energy saving.
