Caution- please read your solar module/pal manuals and follow the laid down instructions on maintenance and cleaning. Please ensure you have the required safety gear; equipment and PPE when working at high heights. Avoid touching any cables. Below is just a guide on how to clean your panels and DOES NOT replace manufacturer/supplier’s recommendations.
Do panels really need to be cleaned?- the answer to this question largely depends on the location of the installation. Some areas are quite “clean” and dust rarely accumulates on the panels; with the little that collects easily cleaned by rain and snow. But note that the rain/snow will largely just deal with the little dust; but panels are also affected by things like bird droppings; leaves and ash. Most areas; between the rainy seasons; actually do collect a lot of dust on the solar panels which can significantly reduce the efficiency (up to more than 20% losses [1] ) of the solar panels.
How often should I clean my panels?- this really depends again on your location. Some very dusty areas might need you to clean them as much as once every week/fortnight. It’s best to regularly inspect your solar panels; especially when output or charging educes below expectations. In windy conditions areas surrounded by trees may experience panel cover by leaves which can affect energy production
Methods of cleaning the panels?- just like with any cleaning process; the method of cleaning depends on the nature of the dirt that needs to be removed. See below some recommendations based on nature of “dirt”[2]
(i) Minimal Surface soiling-

if the dirt is just dust the easiest was to clean your panels would be to hose it with clean water. Ensure that the source is not harsh; high pressure water
(ii) Heavy Soiling

- if the build-up is heavy; with more than dust to deal with; then you need to clean using a soft brush and squeegee (with a long handle to allow you to clean without stepping or leaning on the panel surface) ;water hose; and bucket filled with mild soap 2. You can look for all-in-one window washing tools with a scrubber to clean the panels. Cleaning process: a) Fill your bucket with clean water and add a small amount of soap b)Rinse solar panels with clean water to clear away loose dirt. c)Use soft scrubber and soapy water from the bucket—or mixing sprayer—to gently wash the surface of the panels d)Rinse solar panels with clean water from the hose a second time d) Squeegee panels dry.
If the issue of heights; steep roofs; warranty conditions; electrical hazards is too daunting for you to take you can always get in touch with us for professional panel cleaning services. It is actually best to use professional cleaners to ensure you do not risk damage or your precious system or expose yourself to hazards.
